Colonel Richardson Middle School
Renovation
Maginniss + del Ninno Architects’ work on Colonel Richardson Middle School is a large-scale improvement project. Some key points and objectives of the project include modernizing the building to meet code and technology standards, new windows, more accessible entrances, and doorways, bathrooms school-wide, skylights to increase ambient natural light, a new sprinkler system, a parking lot system to accommodate both bus and car traffic, numerous cafeteria and kitchen modifications, a new community wellness center, and a redesigned administrative and guidance suite.
Maginniss + del Ninno Architects worked closely with the building level planning committee to prepare a site-specific educational specification. To better serve the local community, the students, and their families, a new 4,000 sqft. health center was added to the program. Circulation and compartmentalization for security were considered to accommodate the hours of operation of both the health center and athletic programs.
An overall objective of the project was sustainable design. Of note is the geothermal heating system, comprised of 150, 300 ft. deep, wells that operate together with heat pumps to provide both heating and cooling to the building.
